Shape

When it comes to the shape, it’s important that it fits with your furniture. There are a number of shapes and furniture that traditionally match well. For example, consider a round coffee table with a slightly bigger round rug. A rectangular rug fits well with the traditional rectangular dining table.

There are a ton of combinations to make. Does your space have a lot of round lines? Then there might be a good chance that a round rug wouldn’t look out of place.

Size

The size of a rug is and remains important. Doubt can easily strike, especially when you see that there are several options available. In any case, it’s a good idea to get started with a roll of tape at your home. Map the contours of your ideal size out on your floor and discover which size belongs there. This way you get a good indication of what you’re looking for.

In the case of the living room, it’s good to consider whether you want to place your carpet beneath or in front of your sofa. This will, of course, affect the size of your new purchase. Are you looking for a rug beneath your dining table? Then it’s smart to “reserve” at least 70 cm around the table for extra space. This prevents the chair legs from resting on the edges of the rug.

Colour

You may have decided on a shape, but you shouldn’t forget the importance of the colour of your rug. Here, too, we have plenty of options to offer. But which colour suits you best? It’s impossible to offer a 100% success rate, but you can certainly increase your odds by looking at a number of factors.

First, it's smart to not just focus on the rug. Try to keep an eye on the overall picture as much as possible. Does the colour you have in mind match the sofa, the coffee table, and the rest of the interior? If so, you can hardly go wrong!

In addition, it’s also advisable to take the lighting into account. For example, do you have a living room where sunlight has free play? Then a relatively dark rug can suddenly appear a lot lighter. This also works the other way around, naturally. With less light, a dark blue rug can suddenly tend more towards black.

High pile or low pile?

During your orientation, you’ll certainly come across the terms high and low pile, but what do they actually mean? These two terms have to do with the material the rug is made of. A low pile rug is made of short threads, while a high pile rug is made of long threads.

To make the right choice here, it might be good to compare the advantages. A high pile rug looks cosy, radiates warmth, and actually gives warmth. Walking barefoot on a high pile rug feels wonderfully soft. In addition, dirt such as sand is less noticeable because it sinks into the carpet. A high pile carpet also dampens sound (less noise).

A low pile rug is especially a smart choice if you have children and/or pets. Low pile rugs are easier to clean. In addition, low pile rugs are known for their sleek appearance and pronounced colours. These colours really stand out due to its short threads. Furniture is also easier to move around on a low pile rug.
