5 tips for buying a new sofa

Tip 1: choose the right size

This is the foundation of your new purchase. If you’re going to replace an old sofa, you should already have an idea of how big your new one should be. Are you going to move? Then the size can cause some problems.

To measure is to know. A true cliché, but one that’s very true. Measure everything and don’t forget to include the rug, other seating furniture and even the TV furniture in the equation. This way you can choose a size that doesn’t disturb the balance with the other parts of your interior. Maintain 40 cm distance between the sofa and your coffee table. 60 to 80 cm for walking space.

Tip 2: immerse yourself in the materials

A soft fabric such as velvet or a harder one such as leather? The world of sofa upholstery has many options and each one has its advantages and disadvantages. Try to imagine exactly what you expect from your sofa and be sure to consider your living style. Naturally, your new sofa must match the rest!

Tip 3: colours, colours, and more colours

Falling in love with a sofa right away is (of course) good news. But after that you still have to pick the right colour! That’s not always a trifling feat, so take your taste, living style and the incidence of light into account when deciding on a colour.

Especially the latter is very important. Do you have a living room where sunlight has free play due to large windows? Then there’s a good chance that a relatively dark sofa will look a bit lighter in your home. This also applies the other way around, of course. A light grey sofa can suddenly appear a lot darker due to a lack of daylight.

Tip 4: who will be the benchwarmers?

Are you looking for a sofa for you and your partner? Do you have a family with 3 children? Do you have 2 dogs that know how to find their way to a soft couch? The answers to these and many other questions will eventually lead you to the perfect sofa.

The presence of children and/or animals significantly increases the risk of stains. Not a problem in the slightest, of course, but then it's nice if you have a sofa that you can easily clean. Tip 5: think practically

Design vs functionality. Try to find the golden mean between these two. Does your new sofa have low legs? Then there’s a good chance you cannot easily vacuum under it.
