On this page, we’ll show you exactly what Japandi is and what to keep in mind if you want to bring this style into your home.
What is Japandi?
You may already know what Japandi is. However, we can imagine that this relatively new interior style still holds many secrets for you, or perhaps you’ve never heard of it before. Japandi is a combination of two design styles you’re probably familiar with: Scandinavian and Japanese. At first glance, this may seem like an odd mix, but it has resonated with many households and now has millions of fans worldwide. Wabi-Sabi and Hygge form the foundation of this style. Uh, what? You can read more about it in our blog.
Characteristics of Japandi interior
When we take a closer look at this style, we find it rooted in both Scandinavian and Japanese influences. From the Scandinavian side, designs are a key feature in Japandi interiors. You’ll notice an abundance of light, the use of natural materials such as oak and walnut, and a strong focus on coziness. If you want to highlight Scandinavian elements in your interior, choose sustainable types of wood, plenty of white tones, and other neutral colors.
From the Japanese side, the focus is primarily on minimalism. For Japandi, the principle “less is more” truly applies, and excess should be avoided. In short, keep it simple and create a calming space where you can feel at home. The minimalist approach of the Japanese style pairs perfectly with the serene nature of Scandinavian design. Japandi materials
Before you start putting together your new interior, it’s important to know the key characteristics of your furniture. One of the most significant aspects of a design style is the materials used. While there are no strict requirements, it’s helpful to know which materials are prevalent in the Japandi style, making the selection process much easier.
For a Japandi kitchen, you’ll likely focus on the dining table and chairs. Oak wood is the perfect choice for your dining table's surface, as it is durable and will last a long time. Interestingly, we offer three different types of oak and a whopping eleven colors. You can easily customize your Japandi dining table using our 3D configurator. Tip: If you want a natural look, go for weathered oak. With these tabletops, we intentionally leave the knots and cracks intact.
When it comes to Japandi dining chairs, you’ll find many minimalist designs and understated colors. You can also incorporate wood here. A great idea is to match the fabric and color of your chairs with the dining table and the rest of your living area. This creates a beautiful harmony and gives the entire ground floor a cohesive Japandi vibe.
The same principle applies to a Japandi sofa. Let the color of the fabric guide your choice and match it with the rest of your interior. Tip: A Japandi coffee table completes your living room perfectly. We have plenty of options in oak and walnut for you. Additionally, we offer a variety of choices to furnish your Japandi living room from top to bottom. Have you considered an oak TV unit? This piece will give your Japandi style a real boost.
Japandi colours
A lot of wood, indeed! When we focus on the colors within a Japandi interior, we hit upon the second most important aspect. Knowing the material and color of a piece of furniture takes you a long way. We’ve touched on colors earlier, but what are the true Japandi colors?
From the Scandinavian influence, we see a lot of white tones that fit beautifully into these interiors. Think beyond pure white to include beige, sand, warm whites, and more. There are countless options, ensuring you’ll find a color that matches your taste. Going a step further, you’ll notice many neutral colors, such as gray, brown tones, beige, and ecru. The color palette may not be spectacular, but there is definitely a coherent line throughout. The combination of these colors with wood often creates a stunning match, which is exactly what you want. Tip: We have eleven different colors of oak available and dozens of colors for our chairs and sofas, so there are hundreds of combinations to create! Extra tip: A Japandi area rug provides a great opportunity to make a certain color more dominant in your space.
