Number of chairs at an oval table
Discover the perfect dimensions
When looking for a new dining table, there are several factors that determine whether your acquisition meets your expectations to the letter. For example, think of the colour and the material. A third factor is size.
But how do you determine how big your new dining table should be and what should you pay attention to if you’re about to make a decision? We have collected all the useful tips in this blog to help you.
Shapes of oval
At Table du Sud we always deliver custom work from our own workshop, which means that we have all the freedom to bring our new designs to life. In the case of oval dining tables, there’s a total of four different shapes. First of all, of course, there’s the classic oval shape, which you undoubtedly know.
But it doesn't stop there. For example, we have developed the increasingly popular Danish oval. This is the perfect shape if you want to add standard seats at the head sides. By the way, we also have the semi-oval and the semi-circle if you're looking for a shape that deviates slightly from the classic one. Want to know more about the shapes? Then read our blog about the 4 oval shapes.
A glance at a full dining table
To determine the size of your new dining table, it’s smart to first establish what you expect from your new purchase. Do you always dine with your family of four and do you reckon that’s enough in terms of seating? Or would you rather always have room for six people?
These are the kind of questions you need to answer to determine the size. In addition, it’s smart to consider your oval shape. For example, it’s easier to add chairs at the end of a Danish oval table than at a classic oval dining table. This doesn’t mean it is impossible with the latter, but it can affect the legroom.
Don't forget the chairs
If you’re completely focused on your new table, you may lose sight of the dining chairs. Still, it’s smart to include the chairs in your plans. This mainly has to do with the width of your chairs. For example, do you have dining chairs with armrests? Then they take up a lot more space than ones without. Certainly in the case of a relatively wide table, the difference can be quite significant. 4 chairs without armrests simply need less space than 4 chairs with armrests. As a rule of thumb, you can assume that approximately 70 cm is needed per seat.
Dimensions
If we translate the number of seats into a size, we can see that a table with a length of 1.60m to 1.80m is suitable for 3 to 4 people. We recommend a slightly larger table for 5 people (2.00m) and 6 people (2.20m). Are you looking for a relatively large table? Then choose 2.40m (8 people) or 2.80m (9 people). Again: always consider the type of seats. In addition, don’t forget to determine whether you want to place chairs on the end sides. Do you want appropriate advice about the right size?
