Designing your living room in 5 steps
In five steps, we guide you through a wide range of inspiration and practical advice on how to shape your living room.
From layout and furniture choices to creating atmosphere. Step by step, we help you turn your house into a home.
Step 1: The role of your living room
What do you want the space to do for you? This question forms the starting point of your layout. You might ask yourself:
- Do you want to unwind on a generous lounge sofa?
- Do you enjoy hosting guests?
- Do you need space for children to play?
- Or a quiet corner to read?
Define the purpose of your living room first. From there, you can begin shaping the layout. Once the intention is clear, the choices follow naturally.
If relaxation is key, a deep sofa with a chaise or lounge section works well. If you often entertain, a more upright seating position offers better support.
Try to think openly. All our furniture is crafted to order, allowing you to tailor each piece to your needs. Whatever your space or its proportions, there is always a solution that fits. Your room should not limit your ideas.
Step 2: The layout of your living room
For more compact spaces, our interior specialists often recommend choosing larger pieces. It may seem counterintuitive, but it creates calm and visual clarity. Opt for one generous sofa with a corner, rather than multiple smaller pieces.
Balance is equally important. Combine furniture on legs with pieces that sit closer to the floor. For example, a sofa grounded to the floor paired with a coffee table on slender legs. Or the other way around. This allows light to move through the space and keeps it feeling open. Use height to your advantage. A tall floor lamp or a vertical cabinet draws the eye upward and brings proportion to the room.
If your living and dining areas share one space, a rug can help define each zone with subtle clarity.
A more spacious room offers freedom. You can introduce multiple functions within one space. For instance, a comfortable lounge area by the television, alongside a smaller setting for coffee or a glass of wine. You might also create a quieter corner to read or unwind.
The same principles apply here. Alternate between raised and grounded furniture. Introduce height with a cabinet, artwork or shelving.
And allow yourself to explore. A larger space invites more considered zoning. A room divider, whether a wooden panel or a carefully placed side table, can bring structure without closing the room off.
When placing your sofa, allow around 30 cm between the sofa and the wall. This creates a lighter feel and helps protect the wall.
If you are choosing a corner sofa or chaise, position the extended section against the wall to keep the room open.
With the purpose and scale defined, consider how you move through the space. Follow natural pathways, either those already present or those that feel intuitive. Allow 80 to 100 cm for main walkways.
Between furniture, 60 cm is usually sufficient, such as between the sofa and coffee table.
Step 3: Choose your interior style and colour palette

A clear style helps bring cohesion to your home. It offers direction in both material and colour, preventing the space from feeling fragmented.
Our interior specialist Daniëlle encourages combining styles:
“Many styles complement one another beautifully. It keeps your interior feeling layered and considered.”
We have gathered an overview of styles to explore what resonates with you.
Do you prefer not to commit to a single style? Or aiming for something more timeless? A considered colour palette becomes your anchor. It brings calm and consistency, especially when selecting furniture. We recommend choosing three base colours.
From there, you can introduce accents through accessories. A subtle way to reflect seasons or introduce contrast without redefining the entire space. One of Daniëlle’s preferred approaches.
Work with the 60–30–10 rule: 60% are base tones, 30% supporting shades within the same palette and 10% contrast. That final 10% is where you can introduce a more expressive note.
Step 4: Choosing the right furniture
This is where everything comes together.
Start with the sofa. It forms the foundation and focal point of your living room. Begin with the right dimensions and model. Guided by the purpose you defined earlier. Then consider fabric and colour. As the largest element, the sofa sets the scale. Ensure other pieces feel balanced alongside it.
Next, choose your coffee table and TV cabinet. The height of your coffee table should align with, or sit slightly below, the seat height of your sofa.
Finally, consider additions such as an armchair or a rug. These pieces support the overall composition rather than define it. A rug can also help zone the space while staying within your chosen palette.
Consistency is key. You might echo the tone of your TV cabinet in your coffee table, or choose the same fabric for both sofa and armchair.
A final note from Daniëlle:
“Always view fabric samples in your own home, in both daylight and shadow.”

Furniture alone does not create atmosphere. Styling brings warmth and character. Introduce a soft rug beneath your sofa and coffee table, or add a carefully chosen lamp. These elements not only enhance comfort but also improve acoustics.
Personal details make the space your own. Display books you return to, or hang photographs that hold meaning.
