Pilling & pleats

On your furniture

Pilling can occur with fabric seats. That has nothing to do with the quality of the fabric. It is a material bound property. This is not a complaint that can be resolved.

Pleating occurs because the fabric should not be stretched too tightly around the furniture to prevent tearing. Pleats are functional because they relieve the seams. This is a normal phenomenon with any upholstered furniture.

Pilling

With pilling, excess fibers of the furniture fabric become tangled together with fluff, fabric or fibers from clothing or, for example, fleece blankets. This creates bubbles. These are coiled fibers that are attached to the furniture fabric. With a pilling clipper you can easily remove pilling. Never use other products, as they can damage the furniture fabric.

Some factors that influence pilling are:
- Pets
- Humidity
- Clothing, fleece throws, pillows and rugs

Pets

Pets naturally have a greasy coat. If they sit on your furniture, the furniture fabric can become greasy. In this way, the furniture fabric has become more susceptible to attracting dust, hair and other fibres, because they adhere more easily. Pilling occurs due to friction when using the seat.

Low humidity

At low humidity (less than 50%), the furniture fabric absorbs too little moisture and the surface is no longer conductive. The furniture fabric becomes static. Static surfaces attract dust and lint, which in turn leads to pilling.

Clothing, fleece, pillows and rugs

Fibers from clothing, fleece throws, pillows and rugs can influence the formation of pilling. These products often have excess fibers that come loose during use and clump together with the loose fibers of the upholstery fabric. This leads to pilling.

Pleats

Pleats are caused by the use of your sofa, chair or armchair. Most seating furniture has a foam seat filling. This ensures a pleasant comfort.

Due to use, the seat is compressed and depending on the hardness of the foam, the covering material (fabric or leather) will be stretched. This creates space in the fabric or leather. This gives visible folds. Pleating cannot be avoided even with an interior suspension.

The degree of pleating is influenced by the properties of the filling and the chosen covering material. For example, when used, the filling will sink further with a soft filling than with a hard filling. The fabric or leather is then stretched faster and more during use. This creates more pleats than with a hard(er) seating comfort.

Leather upholstery

The thinner the leather, the more fine pleats become visible. With a thicker type of leather, the pleats will be more wavy. The size of the seat and back cushions also influences the degree of pleating. The larger the seat cushions, the more pleats. A flattened seat will have more pleats than a convex seat.

Limit pleating

Wrinkling cannot be prevented, but what you can do to limit it is:

- Shake the back and seat cushions regularly, especially with loose cushions with a non-formal filling (such as silicone fibres, polyether sticks, down, feathers or a combination of these). This filling tends to sag during use. By whipping and shaking them vigorously, the contents of the filling are better distributed.

- Use a bench evenly. Especially during the seating period after purchase, all seats should be used evenly. This way there are no visible differences.

- With loose seat and back cushions, it is recommended to change these places regularly, so that every part of the sofa is used equally often.

Seat mirror

Frequent use of the seating furniture can create a seating mirror. This means that the hairs of the fibers are pressed flat. This is caused by frequent use. This creates a shadow in the fabric. You can avoid this by changing seats regularly.

To make a seat mirror that has already been created less visible, you can dampen the fabric very slightly and gently roughen it with a clothes brush. You can also put a damp tea towel over the seat mirror overnight.

Soften filling

By using your seating furniture, fillings become about 15% softer. This percentage can differ depending on the family situation, the intensity of use and the weight of the person sitting on it. It takes on average about 3 to 6 months for the decrease in hardness to stabilize.

The softening of the seat padding is also a normal phenomenon that does not affect the quality of the furniture. It arises because the air is released that is trapped in the foam during the production of the foam. It is therefore not possible to return your furniture and request a refund based on the softening of the fillings.
